Quantitative Trading

The math of markets. Design algorithms that process millions of data points per second to find an edge in the global economy.

What does a "Quant" actually do?

Modern trading is a technology race. You aren't shouting on a floor; you're writing code that makes decisions in microseconds based on probability and risk.

  • 📊 Quantitative Trader: "How much can we lose if the market drops 5% in ten seconds?"
  • 🧠 Quant Researcher: "Can we find a signal in weather data that predicts grain prices?"
  • âš¡ HFT Engineer: "How do we shave 2 microseconds off our network transmission speed?"

The Arbitrage Loop

"Finding price differences across different exchanges instantly:"

1. Identify Signal (Python/R)

2. Execute Order (C++/Verilog)

3. Manage Risk ($P&L$ tracking)

What is the work lifestyle like?

The GoodThe Challenging
Instant Feedback: You know exactly how well your strategy performed by the end of the day.High Pressure: Mistakes can be incredibly expensive and happen in real-time.
Brilliant Peers: You work with some of the best mathematicians and engineers alive.Market Hours: You often need to be "on" whenever the global markets are open.
Compensation: One of the highest-earning fields for new graduates in tech and finance.Zero-Sum Game: For you to win, someone else usually has to lose.

How to land the job

Trading interviews are notorious for probability puzzles and mental math. It's about how you think under pressure.

1. Probability & Games

Solving Expected Value ($E[X]$) problems and game theory scenarios live.

Tip: Practice "Market Making" games—betting on the results of coin flips or dice rolls.

2. Low-Level Coding

Writing highly optimized C++ code where every clock cycle counts.

Tip: Learn how memory works. Understanding "Cache Misses" is more important than knowing a framework.

Preparation Checklist

  • ✅ Mental Math: Use apps like Zetamac to get lightning-fast at arithmetic.
  • ✅ Probability: Read "A Practical Guide to Quantitative Finance Interviews."
  • ✅ Python/C++: Python for researching data; C++ for the actual trading engine.
  • ✅ Game Theory: Play Poker or Chess. It builds the intuition for risk and reward.
